In Artificial Intelligence, fine-tuning means adjusting a pre-trained model (like ChatGPT) to perform a specific task better.

Even though this term refers specifically to machine learning, I think we can also apply it to humans as a self-knowledge exercise.

Just think about how often we set goals and give up because of the roadblocks. Whether it’s weight or being more physically active, we are more likely to achieve these objectives when we tune ourselves with them.

How can we do that? Let’s take a look.

How Does Fine-Tuning Work?

In a certain way, fine-tuning works similarly in both humans and AI models: what you put in comes out. This means that high-quality training data leads to high-quality performance.

For example, let’s say I want to fine-tune myself to decrease anxiety and stress. To achieve this, I can use any training data meaningful to me.

I’m an art-inclined person, so music greatly influences my mood. That said, I would start by being mindful of the music I listen to and avoiding lyrics or rhythms that might trigger anxiety and negativity (such as hostile tunes).

With the paid version of ChatGPT, I could even ask my AI assistant to generate a playlist based entirely on uplifting music. This was the result the last time I tried it out:

You can also try an app like AI Playlist Maker to turn your thoughts into an Apple Music or Spotify playlist. It’s as simple as writing a prompt like: “Music similar to Studio Ghibli”:

Measuring The Effectiveness Of Training Data

We can estimate the effectiveness of a training data set by evaluating our progress concerning a specific goal.

Following the previous example, I could analyze any mood changes over time (perhaps checking in with myself once a week for six weeks).

This can be done through journaling or using an app. For instance, iOS 17 includes a State of Mind tracker where I can log my mood daily and link my emotions to a particular trigger (labels include hobbies, work, tasks, and more).

Then, I can check how frequently my mood is impacted by factors such as work and family.

The Importance Of Adaptability In Fine-Tuning

The most suitable training data depends on what you want to achieve. If you intend to be more physically active, playlists, including songs with a high bpm, might be more effective.

Also, training data includes the places you visit, the people you spend your time with, the content you consume daily on social media, and more.

As philosopher William Blake said:

There’s nothing in my mind that hasn’t been in my senses.

Based on that, if we can be more aware of what we “absorb” through our senses every day, perhaps we can tune ourselves more easily and become our best possible version.

Finally, I’m a big fan of open-mindedness and trying new things. This has led me to surprisingly positive results. Therefore, I’m convinced there must be some adjustment as we learn more about ourselves and why we do what we do.
